WHY PROTEIN?

03-08-2012
Health & Nutrition

Learn more about protein and your workouts so that you can perform at your best.

There are plenty of reasons why protein is a healthy addition to your diet. Many people can benefit from eating more protein every day. Protein is a powerful nutrient that can do amazing things for your body and because of this our bodies need protein for many reasons. Some of the many important reasons we need protein are:

  • Our bodies use protein to make essential chemical building blocks
  • We need protein to help us build and rebuild muscle mass.
  • Making protein a regular part of your diet can help you maintain a healthy body weight.

First things first, you need protein to survive because many things in your body are made with protein. Most people think of muscles, but there are many other parts of you that are made with proteins. Chemicals in your body that are made with protein include DNA, hormones, neurotransmitters and hormones.

Protein is made of something called amino acids. Your body can make protein, but there are nine of these amino acids that your body cannot produce on its own. That means that in order to perform at your very best you need to eat the foods that provide you with these amino acids. The foods that contain these essential amino acids are eggs, meats and dairy products.

Not getting enough protein in your diet can lead to one disastrous effect. Your body will start breaking down muscle to get the protein it needs to survive and make the essential chemicals mentioned previously. You will lose muscle mass if you do not eat enough protein. This is probably the point where you start asking yourself:

How much protein do I need?

That answer depends on a variety of factors. It can depend on:

  • Your body size
  • Your age
  • Your daily activity level

The very bare minimum amount of protein usually recommended by dietitians is .37 grams per pound of body weight.  This should be considered the absolute bare minimum and is definitely not an adequate amount if you are an active person. It is recommended that active adults get .8 grams of protein per pound of body weight and those who would be considered athletic should be getting 1 gram per pound of body weight. At this level you can be assured that your body will not use your muscles as a source of protein and that you can actually build more muscle. Once you’ve figured out how much protein you need, you can decide how much Core Power to drink after each workout. Each 11.5 oz bottle of our Core Power high protein milk shake contains 26 grams of milk proteins, and the light versions have 20 grams of protein.

Protein can help me lose weight?

Yes it can. In fact, protein helps you lose weight two ways.

  • Protein helps you stay satisfied longer.
  • Protein helps build lean muscle mass.

Getting adequate protein in your diet can help you lose weight because it helps you feel full and satisfied longer. When you include a lean source or protein at every meal that meal will stay with you longer and you will be less inclined to eat between your planned meals and snacks. This can help you eat fewer calories each day. Eating fewer calories that you burn is what leads to healthy weight loss. Protein keeps you feeling fuller for a longer period of time because it takes longer for your body to digest.

As mentioned previously, protein helps you build lean muscle mass. This can also assist you in losing weight because lean muscle mass burns more calories even when you are sitting around doing nothing. When you build muscle your body is burning more calories each day. The more calories you are burning each day even at rest, the easier it is to create a calorie deficit and lose weight.

Getting adequate protein each day is essential. You want to avoid your body using your muscle mass to carry out its essential functions. You can prevent this from happening by making sure you include plenty of protein rich foods like Core Power in your diet. If you are active or athletic this is even more important.  Make sure you are getting some lean protein with every meal and snack, especially after a tough workout. Again, this is where we come in – Rely on Core Power to provide you with high quality protein after a tough workout or whenever you need it most!
